Kevin Hazell   BUSHFIRE PLANNING 

Kevin Hazell established his own bushfire planning business in 2015.

 

Before establishing Bushfire Planning, Kevin was Manager Bushfire Planning at the Victorian Government’s department of planning. He was responsible for advising the state government in relation to the land use planning recommendations of the 2009 bushfires royal commission.  

 

In this role Kevin led the development and implementation of the Bushfire Management Overlay and other changes to how bushfire was considered in land use and development across Victoria.

Central to this work was leading the development of the bushfire rules that are now contained in the Bushfire Management Overlay that landowners wanting to build need to comply with.

​

Kevin also authored key bushfire documents for the Victorian Government. This included:

• Guidance on the Bushfire Management Overlay, including how it operates and how to determine if planning permission is appropriate. You can read this document here.

Kevin led the roll out of a Bushfire Management Overlay training program that was delivered to over 1,200 built environment professionals across Victoria between 2012 and 2014. This included local council planners and  consultants doing bushfire planning work in Victoria. 

 

Kevin also has a broader skill-set beyond bushfire-related planning issues. He has worked as a town planner for over 15 years for the Victorian Government, as part of London government, and for a number of local councils in both Victoria and the United Kingdom.

 

Kevin’s qualifications include: -

• Executive Master in Public Policy from the University of Melbourne 

• Master Business Administration (Open) from the Open University UK

• Post-Graduate Diploma in Planning & Design from the University of Melbourne 

• Bachelor of Arts - Planning & Geography from the University of Melbourne.
